What did Carbone 4 do? Assess the carbon footprint of the two options under consideration

Carbone 4 has been commissioned by the mediation mission for the Grand Ouest airport project to calculate, in a transparent and legally enforceable manner, the future greenhouse gas emissions generated by each of the two options under consideration: the expansion of Nantes Atlantique (NA), on the one hand, and the relocation of NA to Notre-Dame-des-Landes (NDDL), on the other.

We were not asked to make any recommendations regarding the decision to be made in light of these figures, nor, more generally, to provide a critical assessment of the relevance of an airport project within the framework of the Paris Agreement.

How did we go about our work, particularly with regard to the mediation mission?

A senior consultant at Carbone 4 specializing in transportation and mobility performed the calculations, under the supervision of Jean-Marc Jancovici, who provided guidance on the major methodological issues that required discussion. Discussions with the mediation team took place solely to present interim results or to obtain the information needed to perform the calculations in question (for example, to obtain the specifications of the buildings to be constructed, the traffic scenario common to both options, etc.). Under no circumstances did these discussions influence the calculations in any particular direction.
